Exotic pets of writers and artists

    August 20, 2020 - By Tom

Most people are happy to own a cat or a dog, or perhaps a goldfish, but some prefer other more unusual creatures. Here there’s an article I just published elsewhere that talks about a few writers and artists who had a taste for exotic or unusual pets, most of which I did not mention in the boo “Our Pets and Us“.

CONTRARIUM

Sailing against the tide.

A little short movie I shot and edited in less than two weeks. It was supposed to be just a silly joke but I'm happy with the result. I think it looks pretty nice considering how quickly it was done. No AI was used, just stop-motion animation, manipulated images, recorded human voices (mostly mine, but not only) and sound effects.
The choir singing in the video is the Regensburg Cathedral choir, but I could not use their audio for copyright reasons, so the voices are from the Capella Sistina Choir in Rome (a bit out of sync). "Glory to God in the Highest, and on Earth, peace to men of good will". (Luke 2:14)

I don't know the answer to that one. There is clearly an ongoing shift of power from the West to the East, but not everything is written down.
Can Europe be Saved?
The current 2020s decade seems like a dark time, but the 2010s and 2000s were not much better. The 1990s seems like the last "happy" decade. But was it really "happy"? And which earlier decade was the best? A nostalgic video about a troublesome present and apparently simpler, happier times.
Will anyone be nostalgic about the 2020s? And which decade was the best?
Parties for them, untold horrors for us. What else is new?

A random rant against the algorithm. Images are from "Metropolis" (1927).
Death to the Algorithm! Or: Why the Internet sucks now
Trust in institutions has fallen to an all-time low. And trust between people too. Who do you still trust? Film scenes are from "Scarlet Street" (1945), "Trust" (1990) and a few others.
The End of Trust
A day in Rome. It was supposed to have a narration but I thought just images and music was best for this one. An afternoon walk: Villa Farnesina, Trastevere, Church of Santa Dorothea, San Salvatore in Onda. Not the most famous sights in Rome, not a touristic video, just a collection of impressions.
